Chris and Gene Smith Get an Education Memorial Scholarship The Chris and Gene Smith Get an Education Memorial Scholarship has been established to assist Hand County students reach their goal of attaining a bachelor degree. Preference in awarding this scholarship will be given to a Hand County student who has been admitted to or is currently attending an accredited college or university. A student may apply for and receive this $500 scholarship more than one year, depending on the number and quality of applications received in a given year. Chris and Gene were born and raised in Hand County. Chris worked as a rural country school teacher prior to her long-term employment with the Hand County State Bank. Gene was employed with Nelson Seed Company and also worked for several years with Russell Hanks hauling gravel and moving dirt. Chris and Gene often encouraged their children with what could be referred to as the family motto, & get an education, that's something that can't ever be taken away from you!" As a result, all their children and grandchildren have college educations that include bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. Selection is based on the applicant's grade point average, school and community involvement, and written essay. The topic of the essay is, "What I plan to do with my college education." Applicant Must: 1. Be a Hand County resident who has been admitted to or is currently attending an accredited college or university 2. Have at least a 3.0 Grade Point Average 3.
